Terrarium Care Guide

What is a Terrarium?

A terrarium is a sealed or open glass container that houses plants or small ecosystems, creating a self-contained environment for growth. Originating in the 19th century, terrariums were first popularised by Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, an English physician and amateur botanist. In 1829, Ward accidentally discovered that plants could thrive in sealed glass containers. This invention revolutionised plant transportation, allowing exotic species to survive long sea voyages during the Victorian era.

How do they Work

A closed terrarium functions as a self-sustaining ecosystem, mimicking natural cycles within a sealed glass container. The plants inside release moisture through transpiration, which condenses on the container walls and returns to the soil, creating a water cycle. Sunlight enables photosynthesis, where plants produce oxygen and energy, while their respiration balances carbon dioxide levels. Organic matter, such as fallen leaves, decomposes with the help of microorganisms, recycling nutrients back into the soil. This closed-loop system allows the plants to thrive with minimal external maintenance.

Maintenance of your Terrarium

  • Put your terrarium into a spot that receives bright indirect light. Never allow direct sunlight to hit the glass as this will overheat the plants.

  • If your terrarium condensates up at any point follow these steps. Remove the lid for a few hours and make sure the condensation has cleared before placing the lid back on. If it condensates again repeat this process. A terrarium with condensation has too much moisture inside and will cause the plants to rot. Consider what caused the condensation. Have you overwatered it? Is it receiving direct sunlight? Is it too close to a radiator.

  • Once a month check the soil. If it is damp it does not need any water. If it feels very dry lightly spray your terrarium. Depending on the location and planting some terrariums might never need watering,.
